Originally created by Toshikazu Kayano as his first design project with the brand, Asics’ EX89™ sneaker blends the heritage influences of the GEL-EXTREME™ basketball shoe from 1989 with modern cushioning properties.​ The upper’s layered leather construction continues the basketball inspiration as it is met with spirited colour blocking that matches the era’s iconic NBA team uniforms. The style boasts an updated cushioning system with Asics’ FF BLAST™ technology and features a sculpted heel shape to improve underfoot comfort. Inspired by the designer’s first business trip to the United States in 1987, the outsole’s functional grip pattern is meant to mirror the view of a city from the sky.
